Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who is the fairest of them all? Why, the Evil Queen, of course! If not, she would certainly have Snow White’s head (or at least fed her a poisonous apple or two). Welcome to EvilQueenCostume.Com, where we turn even the demurest angel into an evil queen, straight out of a fairy tale by the brothers Grimm.
An Evil, Villainous Queen
The Evil Queen is known throughout history as being the villain in various fairy tales, including Snow White, whom she sought to put an end to because Snow White was the fairest in the land, a title which the Evil Queen sought for herself. The Evil Queen was actually Snow White’s stepmother, and she definitely had what is known as a narcissistic personality. Basically she was struck on herself, super vain, and just evil enough to kill any woman who she saw as competition, including her own step daughter, Snow White, a princess so fair that her beauty was the stuff of legends.
Will You Be the Fairest of Them All?
The Evil Queen’s vanity was fed by her enchanted mirror. This mirror was bound by a spell to answer the question that the queen would ask it each day: “Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?” The mirror would, each day, answer that the Evil Queen remained the fairest in the land. As Snow White blossomed and grew into a young woman, the mirror, under its spell, was unable to answer in its usual way and pronounced instead that Snow White was indeed the most fair. The Evil Queen could not have that happening, so she set about to poison Snow White, who was driven far into the forest where she would meet the Seven Dwarfs (in the Disney version of the tale at least). The actual fairytale version – which is the original telling of the tale, is a bit grimmer and the ending is not one of “happily ever after”.
Dressing as the Evil Queen
Nonetheless, the Evil Queen remains a perfect character for your next Halloween bash, masquerade ball, or other get-together. An Evil Queen costume can take on many different looks, but most include a hooded gown, crown, and cape, which are keeping with the dress of the period.
Bloody Mary, Bloody Mary, Bloody Mary
But the Evil Queen from the story of Snow White is not the only evil queen throughout history. There have been many other not so nice queens that you might want to portray with an evil queen costume. A good example if Queen Mary of England, also known as Bloody Mary, and perhaps the origin of the urban legend of saying “Bloody Mary” three times in a dark bathroom in order to conjure up the ghost of Mary herself.
The Other Evil Queen – Mary Tudor, Bloody Mary I of England
Mary Tudor was the first woman to be crowned as the sovereign ruler of England, although she reigned only briefly, due to illness. Mary was a stout Catholic, and had seen her country ripped apart when her father, King Henry VIII, separated England from the Catholic Church when the Pope refused to grant him a divorce from Mary’s mother, Catherine of Aragon. Upon being declared queen, Mary began what would be one of the bloodiest reigns in English history, executing anyone who refused to convert back to Catholicism. The people of England dubbed Queen Mary I as Bloody Mary due to the number of religious executions that she ordered. It was Mary’s way or the highway! Was Mary Tudor, the first female ruler of England really evil, or was she just standing up for her Catholic beliefs? The thousands of executed people and their families would agree that she was very evil, comparable to a 16th century Adolph Hitler.
Dressing as Bloody Mary
Either way, dressing as Mary Tudor, one of the most evil queens in history, is a very fitting Halloween get-up and can involve dressing in period clothing to match the Tudor period, or you might take a more gory view of Mary Tudor and play off her “Bloody Mary” reputation by dressing in period clothing that has been soaked in fake blood, perhaps adding bloody hands to the ensemble (although Mary didn’t actually perform any of the executions, she only ordered the executioner to execute those who opposed her religious views). Great companions to Bloody Mary if you are going as a group to a Halloween party, costume party, masquerade ball, or other event is King Henry VIII (her father), Anne Boleyn (her mother), Queen Elizabeth I (her half sister), Philip of Spain (her husband), or you might have other members of the group dress as courtiers.
Evil Queen Costume Accessories
Whether you want to go dressed in an Evil Queen costume from the Evil Queen that was seen in Snow White, or you wish to dress as the Evil Queen Mary Tudor, also known as Bloody Mary, some different accessories may be in order. For example, wearing the evil queen costume from the Snow White fairytale, you might carry a hand mirror along with you, so that you can ask the mirror the famous question that caused Snow White’s downfall in the original Grimm’s tale. If you dress in an evil queen costume as Mary Tudor, Bloody Mary I of England, then you might carry a fake or faux axe, dripping in fake blood, as the axe was the weapon of choice when it came to executions in England during the Tudor period. You might also dress up your evil queen costume with a rosary and crucifix, as Mary I was a Catholic queen.
